SAME PROBLEM !!!
I downgraded back to 11.04 and there is no problem with the audio...
however...when I tried 11.10 and the new 12.04...the problem was quite
evident...
the audio would lag or be doubled...almost a slight delay happening...
much too annoying to watch any video...I tried all video
Cannot reproduce anymore. I opened VLC, Preferences, changed Audio
Output module from ALSA to Pulseaudio, and sound files play just fine. I
have 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.3.
Thanks!

Did you try with an updated VLC (i.e. 1.1.9-1ubuntu1.2 where 1.2 is the
important thing)? Can you provide the VLC verbose logs (vlc -vv) ?

vlc 1.1.9 still gives a static audio when trying vlc --aout-rate 48000
Same flv video sounds great in other players like Banshee, Movie

Suggestions ?

Hi,
I have this problem, too. In short, selecting PulseAudio from the Audio
Preferences gives me scratchy, static-y, awful sound. Selecting Alsa
gives me normal sound.
I tried Rémi's commands, and VLC still sounded awful.

What *I* see is most likely a kernel driver bug. I don't know if we're
seeing the same bug or two different bugs with similar symptoms though.
Could you try this? Add this line to /etc/pulse/daemon.conf (you will
need sudo):
default-sample-rate = 48000
Save the file, and restart PulseAudio:
#
So, does anybody know, is this a pulseaudio or vlc problem?

Hmm, I hit a possibly similar problem today, after kernel upgrade. I managed to
work around it this way:
1/ remove PulseAudio
2/ start VLC (using ALSA) as: vlc --aout-rate 48000
I guess PulseAudio could be kept if I could convince it to output at
48kHz instead of 44.1kHz.

Not hearing anything with ALSA is a strong sign that PulseAudio ALSA
emulation is not working correctly, not VLC.

I am similarly affected. VLC after default install is completely
unusable due to the audio distortion and echo effect.
My setup is much the same as 'whoop': uname -a

A little more information: Switching to 'Alsa audio' does indeed fix
the audio problem, but only until I closed and restarted VLC. After
that I hear nothing at all. Switching back to 'Default' or 'Pulseaudio
audio output' brings things back to normal upon the next re-start of
VLC.

OK, forget echo... Does this make sense:
A second audio stream which lags behind a first (correct) audio stream. The
second audio stream is very scratchy and static.

No clue what the problem is then, and truth be told, I don't really
understand your symptoms description.

static audio echo when playing
I'm affected by it as well, ever since i upgraded from 10.10. Sometimes
it just goes away when i simply open then close the Ubuntu sound
preferences dialog. The audio works fine in mplayer but as soon as I use
VLC the audio has lots of noise and there is echo. Explicitly choosing
ALSA in VLC and
Choosing Pulseaudio in VLC causes it to go noisy again.

@Rémi Denis-Courmont: Could you tell me what is unclear about my symptoms
description? So I can try to explain better.
I just hear a loud scratchy echo which makes it next to impossible to hear
anything clearly...

Can you provide the output of 'pactl list' when this happens?
Does it still happen if you select 'ALSA' as audio output in VLC preferences?

Changing from default to alsa without a vlc restart works sometimes.
Changing from default to alsa and restarting vlc always works.

I noticed that when playing something in totem and also start something
in vlc, the audio in totem also gets a static delayed echo. As soon as I
stop vlc the audio in totem goes back as it should.
