I have experienced exactly the same bug.
The interesting thing is that when I made I clean install of the Ubuntu
12.04 distro, the VPN connected with no problem at all, and after a few
days it just didn't work anymore. This es my syslog info:
May 5 19:05:43 andres-desktop NetworkManager[1060]:
[Expired for network-manager (Ubuntu) because there has been no activity
for 60 days.]

Please make sure your settings are correct for the connection: for
instance, make sure MPPE is enabled if it's enabled on the server, and
that compression is not enabled if it's not enabled on the server. Since

Now I can connect without problems from the Virtual Windows as well from Ubuntu

Interesting is that I have an WindowsXp installed in Virtual Box on my
Ubuntu 11.04 and I can nonnect to VPN using pptp and the connection is
stable.
