I had the same problem once. I solved it by deleting the printer and
installing a new printer. Hope this can help you.

Yes, it works now!
Thank you Hunk! I remove old cups-pdf printer, create new (without reinstalling
cups-pdf) and now all works fine.

That's pretty strange. I wonder what adding it manually does differently
than letting our installation script do it for you. Can you attach the
cups.conf for both cases (give them a different name e.g.
install_cups.conf and manual_cups.conf) so that we can compare the
result? Thanks!

I cannot do this. If you need it, I can attach my cups.conf, but cannot
attach cups.conf before manual readding cups-pdf printer.

You
Same error message after the maverick - natty udpate (I came here googling
it), but now it works for me:
I removed the PDF printer, trying to add it again, when I realized it was
imposible: cups-pdf package had dissapeared with the update (I swear it was
installed before the update)

If I want to print some documents from Firefox - nothing to print
The cups-pdf CUPS backend seems to simply have aborted before starting
to process the job. See below.
Anton, do all cups-pdf jobs fail for you?
Can you attach your PPD file, /etc/cups/ppd/Virtual_PDF_Printer.ppd?

E [30/May/2011:11:31:53 +0400] [Job 1] Job aborted due to backend
Anton, do all cups-pdf jobs fail for you?
Yes. I try to print now one document from Writer - nothing to print.
Can you attach your PPD file, /etc/cups/ppd/Virtual_PDF_Printer.ppd?
It's strange, I don't have this file.
I setup my cups-pdf printer with help of CUPS web interface.

You
Are you sure that you have defined you cups-pdf print queue on the same
machine as where you are running your desktop applications? Sharing
cups-pdf print queues does not work (therefore queues set up by the
cups-pdf package or by system-config-printer are set to not shared). So
if you want to
Yes, I sure :). It's my notebook.
cups-pdf print queue if default print queue on my laptop.
