I tested the hard drive with GSmartControl and ran the extended self test, and it reported no problems with the drive. However, I did manage to get the partitions aligned using the CLI version of Parted and haven't had any more problems with the drive. -- You received this bug notification

GParted uses the libparted library from the Parted project. Both the GParted GUI and the libparted library were enhanced to handle sector sizes larger than 512 bytes. The problem you experienced is contained in the following snippet from the gparted_details.htm log file: resize2fs: Attempt

Actually I think it has something to do with misaligned partitions. I'm still not sure how to fix it because of the way Ubiquity is working, but there's others who have had trouble with 4k block size drives. I already filed a bug in Ubiquity about it:
