This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. As you noted this was fixed in a newer kernel. In order to
backport the patch that fixed the issue, a kernel bisect would need to

Just tested the 11.10 beta 1 live CD, and could not provoke the kernel
crash.
(Compiz got upset and fell over a lot, but that's a different story.)

Installing a mainline build was easier than burning a CD, so I did that
first.
I was unable to reproduce the crash when using:
