So from what I read here, this does not affect fresh installs, but only
upgrades, right? I. e. it is not a bug in the installer (ubiquity).
tzdata's maintainer scripts never remove /etc/timezone, just update it,
so this isn't a tzdata bug either.
So can you confirm that

I just upgraded to Oneiric and I have the same problem.
My /etc/timezone file must have been lost during the upgrade. I recreated it
with the proper contents (Europe/Budapest) and now the time is showing again.
Can we set this bug to New or Confirmed since this is still an issue?

@geser: Me too. If the same is true for others with this problem that
might explain the relatively rare occurance of this. Which package would
normally create /etc/timezone, and is it doing so on a fresh install but
not an upgrade?

I know positively I have not deleted the file.
But creating it manually solved the problem.

I got the same problem (the datetime indicator only displaying "Time").
After recreating that file, the indicator works again. I don't remember
to manually deleting that file (I'm tracking the development release
most of the time and the last clean installation is several releases
old).

OK, think "we" might have cracked it. See attached datetime.log, it reported a
missing /etc/timezone file. So I created it as root with the content:

I think the part you're missing is a few lines below the creation of the
label:
update_label(self, NULL);
gtk_widget_set_visible(GTK_WIDGET (self->priv->label),
self->priv->show_clock);
So even if the value was set before the label was created (which is most

A more likely route is possibly via a race condition:
indicator_datetime_init()

if (self->priv->label == NULL) {

this would just be ATK name showing.
But possibly it's coming from the multi timezone-support:

It's constant: I haven't seen the actual time since I upgraded to
Oneiric (note: I was on "Ubuntu Classic" before the upgrade so can't
comment on whether it worked in Unity before that, but I'm pretty sure I
would have noticed if it did as I did try Unity a couple of times).

Also added indicator-datetime as affected, as it should initialize the label
with an empty label, not a hardcoded "Time" string (see
