This was more of a problem of kernel modules not being updated in sync
and not a problem with the user-level vmware-player package.

I am surprised by the duplicate status. It is resolved but the
problem I encountered was directly related to the missing kernel image
which was preventing the newer vmnet module from being loaded. Once
the kernel image made it to the repos everything

After the missing kernel was released, I attempted to get dpkg to finish
the config but it was still stuck in a loop. Further problems with the
nvidia driver convinced me to start over with the MinimalCD. The
subsequent vmware-player install completed successfully.
