Okay, I extracted the .deb and manually copied the new version of PyDev
into my Eclipse directory and got it running with PyDev 1.2.7 - but I
still have the same problem with crashes. I'm running the Eclipse 3.2.1
ubuntu package.
However my manual install of Eclipse 3.2.2 and PyDev 1.2.7 is workin
I get an error trying to install this: Dependency is not satisfiable:
python-ctype.
I'm not quite sure how to resolve this.

It is unlikely that Sun Java will be the direct dependency for
Eclipse. Currently it depends on java2-runtime, which is provided by
Sun Java, GCJ and maybe more. GCJ just happens to be installed per
default, because it has less strict licensing (GCJ is in main, while
Sun is in multiverse).

I now use sun's implementation of java + eclipse and pydev (not from the
repos). Stability wise it's far more bareable.
If feisty is released with pydev as it is that'll be a disaster. To fix this
i would suggest that on apt install ecplise, the java runtime dependency
would be sun's implementatio
Sorry, I spoke too soon. I had been using PyDev + Eclipse for awhile
without this problem, but it just happened again. It took much longer
for the problem to surface than usual though...
I haven't found any useful info in the error logs, it just says:

Unfortunately, I am not able to track the problem right now. There is
a new version of Pydev, which does not require that horrible 1.4 java
backport patch. So this could probably help. However, I am not sure,
if it will make it to Feisty. If you would like just to test the
package, it is located at
I had exactly the same problem with Ubuntu edgy and feisty on both my
home and work PC's. Using Sun's Java runtime didn't help. I downloaded
Eclipse and PyDev manually and it works without this problem, so I'm
sticking with that for the moment.

Unfortunately, I cannot see anything wrong right now. You can try
using Sun Java to run Eclipse, if that helps. This is not really a
solution, but can help you in this particular case.
If the problem persists, there might be problem with the python

Thank you for your bug report. From the above, I am not sure if it fails
to start or crashes during the run. More information will be needed to
fix the issue.
