Solution of Renzo Filinie did not work for me:
This solves the icon problem for me on Xubuntu 11.10:
Download icons from:
http://xfce-look.org/content/show.php/Elementary+Tray+Icons+4+Pidgin?content=126339
Make new folder called 22 in folder:
/usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu-dark/status/22
the workaround is not correct:
after running the command:
sudo ln -s /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/hicolor/22x22/status
/usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu/status/22
edit the file /usr/share/icons/elementaryXubuntu/index.theme
add status/22, in the Directories string, see below:

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.
