I'm sorry to tell that I can't verify if kernel 3.0.9 solves the regression or not. As the stick showed the same errors after installing kernel 3.0.9 as mainline build, I've done a crosscheck with Ubuntu 11.04 (where the stick always worked). Even there no frontend attached. Seems the stick

Im sorry neither kernel 3.1rc9 nor 3.1.daily (3.1.0-999.201110171146) did solve the problem As I've written I've tried too latest v4l git. So either the problem is in v4l itself - wrong frontend selected - or somewhere else. As I've googled in the meanwhile i2c errors are serious, and are not

If the stick was first connected to Ubuntu 11.04 (where it works) and then attached to Ubuntu 11.10 I get a different dmesg output from Ubuntu 11.10. But nevertheless it doesn't work. What makes me uncertain that linux (or v4l) is the culprit... 1. the stick worked on a ubuntu 11.0 daily
