I have the same problem in a fresh install on a new hard disk, I log
under Unity 3D OK
franco@franco-prova:~$ /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p -f
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.3.11005
The same problem without a virtualbox. There are a full description:

I am tempted to mark this bug as invalid considering it a VirtualBox
driver bug.

Title:
Guest session from a running session fails to start unity or bail out
to another
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11
Not software rendered:no
Not blacklisted: yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap: no
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program:yes
What videocard do you use? It seems like the 3d doesn't work for the
second xsession on your configuration and that the bailer doesn't manage
to fall back to unity-2d
** Summary changed:
- Guest session from a running session is different and weird compared to guest
session from the login
Could you also run /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p -f in the
question session? you can probably use nautilus to browse to /usr/bin
and run things from there
