I used the NVIDIA proprietary driver before, but I like the open drivers as
the support for randr better. I never needed 3d acceleration before
11.10. Ubuntu 2d seems ok now and doesn't have any of the other issues. I
think with nouveau 2d has few issues and randr works.
On 17 Nov 2011 15:05,
I have tested 3.1.0-999-generic #201110240405 for a while now, I haven't
had this particular issue but I do get screen corruption quite a lot.
With multiple monitors it doesn't crash, but I cannot load Unity at all.
I have loaded Unity 2D which seems better. I am getting to the point of
thinking
If you wanted it is always possible to switch to the official Nvidia
proprietary driver instead of using Nouveau, it likely has less issues
in most usage cases.

I have just downloaded the i386 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.0.4-oneiric/ and booted into
this. the files were:
linux-headers-3.0.4-030004_3.0.4-030004.201108301138_all.deb
linux-headers-3.0.4-030004-generic_3.0.4-030004.201108301138_i386.deb
Should I raise the start-up screen as a separate issue? That could be
marked as fixed kernel-fixed-upstream-3.0.4 - unfortunately that
probably means that one of the Ubuntu patches has caused the issue in
the first place.

The mainline kernel 3.0.4-030004-generic didn't fix this just seen the
following (copied from kern.log):
Oct 24 16:12:02 tgreenwood kernel: [ 8009.412867] BUG: unable to handle kernel
NULL pointer dereference at (null)
Oct 24 16:12:02 tgreenwood kernel: [ 8009.412926] IP: [f8731052]
Now running 3.1.0-999-generic #201110240405 will see if I can reproduce
the NULL dereference.

Extract of the issue from kern.log last time it happened. I'll see if I
can reproduce by restarting gnome-shell alot.

Just seen this again - seems to happen again. Haven't got a particular
behaviour pattern to see it, but I had seen an issue with gnome-shell
and ran Alt-F2 then r to restart gnome-shell - which I have recently
noticed sometimes causes graphic artefacts.
Before this my laptop was running Ubuntu
I have just tried restarting gnome-shell a few times lead to 100% CPU
and couldn't recover from within X. I did CTRL+ALT+F1, login,
tried to kill gnome-shell (which failed to resolve anything the X server
seemed to be toast as the windows were partially visible but not
responsive to anything),

Is there any way of replicating this issue that you know of?

No way that I know of replicating - I've only seen it once and couldn't
think of anything strange I was doing. I was in the middle of running
eclipse, reading some email and using a few terminal sessions.

Ok, well by looking through the kernel log it seems as if the kernel
panic is related to the Nouveau drivers.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It
will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release
candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the
upstream kernel,
