use to configure some aspects of compiz and its incompatible with a lot
of configurations in the newest version of Ubuntu. Compiz itself works
fine otherwise, as Unity is built on top of gnome 3, and its still in

with this new environment and I did not know the ccsm command: I just tried it
and discovered it was Compiz. Plus, I would not expect Compiz to work any more:

Thank you for clarifying that. Did you by chance mess around with any
settings in CCSM? That is known to break Unity in a manner similar to
what you're describing.

The unity launcher does not show up at all any more. Exactly like the Start
button's bar in Windows when Explorer crashes.
The icon at the top right is missing in my account, which is annoying. It is
not the case when I log under another account on the same computer.

The unity launcher does auto-hide after some time, are you sure you
aren't observing that behavior? Also, could you describe the problem
more? I'm not sure how the unity launcher crashing would cause you to
have to reboot from the console, as shut down options are available in
the top right corner
