I'm now quite convinced that these horrible crashes were the result of the swap
partition becoming unstuck.
Computer performance had been slow and error prone, then I noticed my swap
partition wasn't being used. Even after using mkswap the correct links weren't
made in /dev/disk/by-uuid, after
having them to a different place doesn't impact on the mirrors use by
example, that's not a 3rd party repos, it's coming from an ubuntu.com
machine

yeah, stupid me. Any chance these can be included in the official repos,
I don't feel like installing from 3rd party repos.
