I had this problem with Ubuntu-Gnome 13.04 on a HP Pavilion g6 laptop. Some USB
ports didn't work (as if they didn't exist).
My workaround has been to add "nomodeset" parameter to kernel boot parameters.

I'm seeing the same thing in 13.04 w/ Samsung Galaxy Note. It used to
work fine, but after upgrading from 12.10->13.04 and from ICS->JB, this
device is unusable from Ubuntu. Dual boot to Windows and it works fine.

I've also got this problem with a Freecom 160Gb USB drive Model
(SSJABA), known as the Freecom Mobile Drive XXS, it is USB2.
If it is correctly detected by Karmic (also an issue with earlier
versions of Ubuntu), it is very slow in reading and writing files (USB
1.1 Speed rather than USB2) when com

I tested a transfer from sda (ide) to sdb (Usb) of an iso (700mb).
The worst for me is the deadline, wich is about 0.5MB/s slower than cfq.
Anticipatory is about 0.7MB/s faster.
At the end I stay with cfq.

After some file transferring, daily use as host of a thunderbird

This may be a useful piece of information.
I am using Ubuntu 9.04. My 16GB flash disk sometimes works and sometimes
does not. I can see some rules in the behavior, but getting exact
results is time consuming.
I can use Low Level Format utility (http://hddguru.com) to reformat the flash
disk in W
interesting note though. I tried karmic alpha 3 and it fixes all my
usb problems. tested the live cd quite extensively.

Ugh. I spoke too soon. I had ehci blacklisted. In summary, unplugging
the Alcor Flash reader allows me to keep ehci, but leaving it in causes
"reset high speed USB device" events.

sorry got the link wrong in the previous post. The correct link is

that the kernel can crash aspects of bios. I have a usb mouse as well
but I wouldn't lose that when the usb crashed in bios. Maybe it uses usb
1.1 transfers.
