I was thinking all along that something probably regressed in the Kernel. But I just recently saw this post - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/877509 It seems running ubuntu-bug and letting it play the test audio seems to fix the audio issue . And this worked for me. So

OK, I uploaded the extra info and changed back to "new". But something really weird happened. This system has had this problem since the beginning (I think I updated it when Oneiric was RC1), and it's been used every day since, so it's been rebooted dozens of times. But now, things have changed.
