It's happening for me, on every pdf, with xpdf (3.02-21build1) and
libpoppler19-0.18.4-1ubuntu3.1.deb.
To create a crashing pdf, use firefox or chrome and print anything to a
pdf file.

Executing xpdf from the command line opens its window, and all its
controls (the ones which are active without opening a file) are
responsive. However, if I open xpdf with a pdf file name from the
command line, the window appears for a fraction of a sec
