I tried a couple of other boot disks and found a distro that didn't present
the problem and that was a bit closer to my Slackware roots. Archlinux. The
problem went away immediately and has not returned.
My apologies for my impatience, but this was my primary workstation at home

Ok... after further testing it appears that there is some sort of IRQ
sharing or switching that is going amok. In the mainline kernel I get
all of the nasty bad scheduler problems, and an IRQ warning early on. I
noticed that this seemed to be linked to the graphics card and the

Finally upgraded the kernel. Problem still happens. At this point I
suspect the rt2500(?) module as that seems to be the module that loads
just before everything goes crazy.
The kernel that shipped with the boot disk has been completely perfect.
Runs for days without a problem.
