Assuming this is not going to be fixed in Feisty, shall we just mark it
a duplicate of bug #89697 which is more relevant to Gutsy now that the
restricted driver installer system seems to be working well?

I have a GeForce 8600 GT and I have the same problem with same error
message.
By default the desktop effect seemed to work when I first compiled the binary
drivers,
but when I selected "advanced effects" I got an error message "no nvidia card
found", so I tried to disable desktop effect but sinc
Oh, you mean an explanation on why it failed. I thought this was about
an error message (and there is actually one). So I'm reopening the
report.
