But what is causing it to be there in the first place? The package
maintainer suggests he didn't register the mimetype. So where does it
come from? Is it still in Gutsy?

I've replicated this bug and found a solution on Ubuntu Feisty
$ sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/griffith.desktop
And remove the MimeType line
$ sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
Remove the relationship between application/executable and
griffith.desktop
And that's all...
But what is causing it to be there in the first place? The package
maintainer suggests he didn't register the mimetype. So where does it
come from? Is it still in Gutsy?
I'm the package maintainer :-)
I forgot about the .desktop file. MimeType line should not appear there
so it's removed now.
I didn't register .sh (or any other file extension/mime type) in my
package. My guess: bug in autodetection?

Just to be sure, i created another user-account.
It didn't suggest to use griffith anymore. (it was not in the right-click menu)
But it was associated though!
If I did a right-click properties .. and went to the open-with tab, it showed.
I wanted to create a screenshot from that account though,
