This problem still exists with OpenOffice 2.4 and Intrepid Ibex. I
cannot browse through a Nautilus ssh folder and open a document without
being prompted for a password and given a "general internet error". Why
is this marked as being fixed?

Just loaded Ubuntu on an older laptop ( dell D505) nothing else on it, new hard
drive. Everything works fine unless I try to access my other computer running
winXP ( yuck! ) via wireless link linksys.

document on a Samba share; the credentials are stored in my keyring and
they work if I i.e. use Nautilus to open the share. OpenOffice though
seems to ignore the keyring and I have to enter the credentials into

I have the same error on Hardy beta where the problem is specific to
OpenOffice files.
I can work around this by using the N. Smith approach.

It was a problem with the Samba Shares and not Openoffice...
Just force you samba shares and restart samba and Openoffice wil work ;)

I'm using Hardy 8.04, and I can browse samba shares, using my username
and password...
But if I try to open that share in Openoffice it asks me for a
Username/Password and I cant open anything :(

I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released.
If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then

For a quick fix, in the the address bar of Nautilus put the user and
password.
ssh://user:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/folder
Here's an example:
ssh://neil:[EMAIL PROTECTED]/home/neil/Development/Web
Where the login is neil and neil's password into the server is pa55word.

I have this bug on a gutsy -gutsy home network. I suggest that the
importance be elevated to high because, without the ability to share
open office, the benefits of networking are much reduced.
I hope this is fixed in Hardy.

You might try using an sshfs entry in your /etc/fstab. I'm not sure if
this bug concerns OO.o accessing gnome-keyring or gnome-vfs (or both).

I can also confirm this bug on 3 of my Ubuntu 7.10 systems running OOo
2.3.0
Are there any work arounds? We use the Places menu to mount SSH shares
and then when we try to edit a file with OOo the password prompt keeps
popping up and we cant get any further than that.

This is still an issue with a fully updated Gutsy Gibbon install and
also with Hardy Heron (fully updated as of 2008-01-16)! I don't think
this is of medium importance, this should be High!

Not sure if this is the same bug, but trying to open .doc files over SMB
from an XP machine's shared folder doesn't work, either. Says "General
internet error has occurred". These are not password-protected files.

I can confirm this too, Feisty 7.04, final. Comes up with the message
when attempting to open a file on a remote fileserver that has
restrictions on who has write access. And of cause the file does not
open.

This occurs still occurs in OOo 2.2.0-0ubuntu2 on Feisty and the Dapper
backport.
There was a small difference on the Dapper backport though, there
"General internet Error" message came after only one attempt to log in
unlike Feisty where there was 3 logins, and the user name disappeared
after one
I can also confirm this, Feisty Beta. Additionally, if public key
authorization is enabled, opening a file over SSH simply hangs
OpenOffice until the ssh process is killed.

password, but then spits out message about internet error and asks for

Every file I tried to open over SSH worked fine except for OpenOffice
documents. When I try to open up an OOo document the splash page comes
up with the password dialog and I get the same problems except the error
I get is:
