Not being able to manually control the start of media in presentation
mode is one of the major shortcomings of OpenOffice in my day-to-day
use of it.
I have to give scientific presentations that contain slides with movies
and text. I would like to be able to circumvent the need to write a

I may not be reading the manual where you were but it looks like it says
it only has the controls during normal view mode (not slide show):
