I can confirm that now with Ubuntu 7.10 (OO 2.3) gradients without
transparency do render correctly, but those with transparency seem not
to render at all. Also objects using images as texture that have
transparency do not render either.
By do not render I of course mean in the slide-show
I can confirm this bug on Ubuntu 7.10 OpenOffice 2.3.0 i386 as well.

The bug is related to a wrong combination of transparency and gradients.
I discovered how to solve the problem on the fly and keep using gradients.
Select the shape and edit the Area properties (FORMAT-AREA).
From the tab AREA select FILL as GRADIENT.

This is now confirmed on OpenOffice 2.2 on feisty on my i386 machine.
Also it is more complex than just gradients, problems with transparency also.
