Just a note - I don't know if this is useful or not. I used the package below to get the nvidia driver, and it works to an extent (on the same Dell D800 reported above). I don't know if it was something that the bug fix requires as a workaround, or if I'm still supposed to use nvidia- glx.

Now the restricted Driver's Manager detects that I need propriety software, but when it installs the driver X will not restart. Judging by the output my card may need the legacy driver. I have attached the whole X log file too: (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??)
