I spoke with mjg59 in #ubuntu-kernel. He told me to remove the CD-drive.
After doing so. The boot process went back to normal. (small stall at the
beginning, but only 30 seconds max)
No longer do I get any ata errors .

None of the above changed anything. Actually got some new errors now I
believe. About the CD-rom Drive. dmesg attached.

there is something i want you to try, since this is similar to another
bug that was reported.
sudo -i
rm -f /boot/grub/menu.lst
(now edit the file /boot/grub/device.map and replace "/dev/hda" with "/dev/sda")
update-grub
shutdown -h
this should fix up grub and power off the machine. now boot ubun
