A couple of weeks ago I installed the Catalyst ATI driver, which I downloaded
from the AMD's site. I followed the instructions on this site:

The driver installation was pretty straigh
I've been playing around with the ATI FGLRX driver lately. It's
definitely related to the issue. When I remove the driver the issue
disappears. I'll try also the open-source ATI drivers.
