This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be started.
Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset.
Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
and Intel graphics.
This bug also affects me, over three years after the bug was posted.
My comuter is an Acer Aspire E1-410-2832
Intel Celeron quad core processor N2920
Intel graphics
4 GB RAM
Happens randomly in ALL internet browsers.

Use vm.swappiness & vm.vfs_cache_pressure to the minimum possible
Run the below command in Terminal
sudo gedit /etc/sysctl.conf
Add the below line at the end of the file. Select File > Save. Select File >
Quit. Restart computer
vm.swappiness=1
vm.vfs_cache_pres
maybe memory is overclocked? Try to test your memory with "memtester"
from a desktop session. This helps me to find the issue in memory.

Changed the Nvidia graphic card to an old HD 5670 Radeon AMD and loaded
the catalyst drivers. *Until now no more system hangups has appeared.*

I have removed unity and activated the compiz application switcher as alt+tab

I think this bug is not solved on 12.04 LTS. If it's a kernel bug, the
patch should be backported to the latest official 12.04 kernel and
delivered via normal software update.
Some people suggested for example to update to kernel v. 3.3.6 available

I just had major data loss due to the computer freezing up because of
this bug. A whole git repository was hopelessly damaged. It contains
major work data. I don't know what I can restore since the last backup.

I was affected by this bug. In mid January I Installed PSensor on my
Laptop . I found very high temp spikes before the fan would increase
speed. The graphing mode of PSensor helped me see this. I installed
thinkfan, and set up the parameters to start the fan at low temps (2900

I think a second monitor increases the probability of freezes. Maybe because of
more GPU Memory usage. When I have connected a monitor to my laptop I have more
often a freeze. And if I work only with the laptop display I have seemingly no
freeze since using kernel version 3.8.2.

I just found this issue, and with latest 12.10 I have this issue, only
when using Thunderbird. I have been working on my laptop for 4 hours.
In the first two hours I have Thunderbird open and it crashed every 20

I did the upgrade, and so far looks good. Installation went smooth.
Had to choose Previous version from Grub menu because it default to
3.6.3. and manually choose 3.5.0-23. All went well after

people report issues on various graphics cards. Mine is AMD chipset with
VGA controller Radeon "AMD nee ATI RS880 [Radeon HD 4200].
Will this reduce visibility to those concerned with the radeon driver?

I've tried that kernel 3.4.0 long time ago but I had no luck with it.
Same freezing problem. Since than I've tried 3.6.3 and still having same
problem.

well, for me it looks like there are more bugs which show the same
effects or only one bug which is caused by different problems and
configurations of hardware. I'm using ubuntu 12.04 on a 64 bit
configuration (and ATI/radeon as graphic card) without any problem; on a
32 bit configuration with sand
Problem description: Screen freeze, keyboard and mouse does not respond. Sound
card keep replaying the last sound.
The problem happened with me a lot when I used google chrome or chromium to
watch videos.
