This machine (8049) is quite unstable. If one press power button in the BIOS
setup menu or grub menu, it hangs.
After vanessa removing RTC battery to reset BIOS setup, it works normally now.
No more hangs when power button is pressed, and S3 does not cause system
hangs...

and locatehang said that system stopped in acpi_hw_write_pm1_control(), which
according to alexhung's suggestion, it may be a problem in BIOS sleep smi

Just tested with a fresh installed 11.04, just like 11.10 and 12.04,
system hangs after I select suspend.

With 12.04, 201105-8049 hangs even if I do suspend in a text console
after unloading ethernet/wifi/bluetooth drivers. LCD backlight is still
on and does not respond to any SysRq magic.
According to the record, it is certified with 11.10. So I installed 11.10 on
it, but it still fails to suspend..
While doing the suspend from menu, the power led is not blinking, so the system
may not run into suspend.
alt+sysrq+b doesn't make a reboot.

Also affects 11.04 with the 2.6.38-15 generic kernel. Did not affect
11.04 with the previous kernel. Started immediately after the kernel
update.
