Since there were 10 or so updates to OO at the time my machine tried to update,
I ended up keeping system monitor open and killing soffice.bin every time the
next patch was presented. It seemed that open office respawned the dang thing
each time. A pain, but it worked

It seems indeed that a openoffice icon appears on my taskbar. After I closed it
the upgrade was successfully done.
For me this issue can be considered as no issue anymore. But there are other

Ubuntu is sudo enabled by default, that is better than letting a user be
root:
ps | grep soffice | sudo xargs kill -9
I wonder how emailmerge became a dependency? I certainly didn't
install it, but reported this bug a couple weeks ago since it was
added to my system.
