This works well for me and other people, so the reason might be that
your hardware setup does not have a link beat. We need to find a
solution for that.

Any inserted discs are about to mount but the popup that shows the mounting

Can you run "banshee --debug" from the terminal, and attach the output
here? Particularly: try importing a CD, then edit the import settings,
then try and import a CD again.

on feisty and the problem seems to be solved.

Just finished installing feisty from scratch with the alternate install

I notice the same thing. It started in Dapper for me and is still
present in Edgy. Sometimes my keyboard works and other times not at all.
In the cases where it doesn't work I need to unplug it and plug it back
in again.
