I found a workaround that seems to work. It seems that the current
version of oprofile gets confused by sampling data from previous
versions or other kernels. After deleting the complete /var/lib/oprofile
directory, oprofile works as expected.

So maybe Ubuntu should detect whether BIOS or laptop harddrive firmware
have set the drive to a power management setting below 128 and override
this and set it to 128 when on AC.

I get this error when I have two SATA's and 2 PATA HDD's plugged in.
Two SATAs work fine.
