I tried switching the runlevel to 3, while it did fix the internet
problem it caused Recovery Mode to lose root permissions and also
started the GUI.

I can still confirm this on gutsy. Also, this is fixed on xfce 4.4.2. I
suggested that it should be backported, and the backport people said it
should be in the updates repository instead.

Agreed. Or at least backport all crashers and functionality flaws.
Appears to be at least 7 crashers mentioned in release notes, maybe more.
This isn't surprising, since as a release candidate suddenly gains a larger
audience, is necessary to release bugfix versions.
