Okay, I got the Strace done, but the file is ~168 MB and is not
attaching. Is that normal?

2.5.31, but have some errors saying no rule to do with modules with
kernel 2.6.32, which of course is still under [testing].

On my desktop Ubuntu, XFS is painfully slow with every kernel above
2.6.30 when it comes to big file removal. This was true for all the
2.6.31 versions and its the same with the latest 2.6.32-9 too. So the
issue is still definitely there.

I am a Gentoo user, and am having the same or similar problem
installing vmware-server with a 2.6.31 kernel. It appears to be caused,
at least in my case, by a definition conflict between the include files
on the system (and included by vmware) and the definitions implicit in
the vmware software.
Since the original reporter is no longer affected by this bug, I'm
closing it. As always, feel free to reopen it if it recurs, or file new

I have the same whistle, but the fix mentioned above (default-sample-
format = s24le) doesn't work. A temporary solution that I found is just
to open Sound Preferences window every time I log in. It is funny but
the whistle disappears while the window is open and comes back when it
is closed. Do
Finally, it is the same for me even starting Audacity from a terminal.
It is still using a lot of CPU while doing nothing and it hangs up sometimes.
No messages appear in the terminal.

Way cleaner than copying to the rescue partition, over-mounting it to /boot and
than doing update-grub/grub-install.

Just found a workaround... worked 3 out of 3 times which is a much better
record than before.

Booted Ubuntu with the modem plugged in.
Right Clicked the icon representing my modem on the desktop (because nautilius
mounted it as a storage device) and clicked eject.
