There is an important distinction that needs to be raised here:
When you just unmount the drive, the light on the drive stays on,
indicating that it might still be connected.
When you "Safely Unmount Drive," the light goes out, clearly indicating

On most boot attempts on the Dell Mini 10 (Intel 945 GM graphics), I am
left with a blank screen when gdm starts. I hear the "ready to log on"
sound and can log on (guessing from the harddisk sounds) - but the
screen stays blank. Only rebooting solves the problem. But as said,
