I updated my machine with the latest 12.04 updates in the past week,
which included some compiz updates (to 0.9.7.8), and the problem is
still occurring.
As mentioned by Christoph, around the time of the latest occurrence I
got an "irq 16: nobody cared" in syslog:

In my case this was due to incorrect packaging of librtmp0 for i386
arch, which placed its .so in /usr/lib/i486... directory. XBMC failed to
load libcurl-gnutls.so then and crashed.

Setting multiple md arrays seems to be a good way to reproduce this bug
(see #682019). Or maybe just a big md array.
After that, it's just a timing issue. After rebooting several times, you will

Looks like this does prevent the lxpanel/volumealsa 100% cpu death.
Though, as you say, the plugin stops working when it happens.
