Well, I removed KDM and rebooted without it.
I use wicd instead of Network Manager because of lp:689529 so it brings up my
wireless connection without requiring manual GUI actions. And this causes a
nice kernel panic (retyping from the screen) :

This is a nasty looking bug indeed! And quite irresponsible from
Canonical to continue shipping this bug. A 10.10.1 would have been a
wiser decision.
Luckily I was already alert that Ubuntu could ship data-loss installer
bugs (faulty grub or mbr, etc.) so I take special care to first check
out

In the meantime, you could try running synaptic, and checking for broken
packages. In bug #693180 the reporter said that he has fixed this by
locating the broken package, removing it, the fixing the remaining
broken packages. See comment 3 from bug #693180.

I was running banshee and chromium and installed via synaptic a banshee
manual extension which required the monodoc browser as depency. Did not
install.
