I have been able to finally get a big desktop dual monitor set up using
the proprietary fglrx driver but it was not very easy or clear cut how
to do so.
I eventually had to disable randr in /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the
following option added in the "Driver" section.

Good news!!!
Catalyst 9.6 installed and is now working with the 2.6.24 rt kernel on Hardy
Heron 8.04.2 amd64 UbuntuStudio. The only problem I encountered was the need
to disable randr to get my big desktop working.

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
when I lost sound in upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy. At that point, I
had added the line
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
to the alsa-base.con
Haven't seen it in a while, happy for it to be marked fixed.

Actually after restarting the inspiron, I've lost sound again. Also
ever since I originally lost sound under jaunty I have had a really
annoying system beep that sounds like an electric shock and that isn't
controlled by the volume level. Any ideas where this beep came from and
