Hi,
Feisty is the first version of ubuntu I've tried - sound works great
aside from the microphone, which I can't get to work. I just have it
plugged in to the back of the PC.

I've now upgraded to gutsy.
I'm still unable to get the microphone working, but arecord does seem to
record static instead of being completely blank.

2.6.17. The design was changed in 2.6.18, so the problem should go away

It was in Edgy. I have just checked, and it is fixed in Feisty. As a
side note, the text which appears in the hotplug dialogue box was nicer
in Edgy ("Upload photos to Digikam" rather than "Detect camera and

Is it worth adding that to the Edgy backports repository? I don't know
whether the people who tend to use backports will be those who upgrade
to Feisty anyway, or whether on the contrary those who take advantage of
the longer term support will also want backports to stay up to date.

To reproduce, run the herd 2 desktop installer in Qemu with the -std-vga
option (it fails without that option too, but differently). The
installer switches to text mode (without clearing video ram). Note:

Yes. The problem is solved! I did an "info expr" and noticed that the manual
page was showed. I expected the expr.info loaded. So I searched for the package
where expr was packed. That was the "coreutils" package. Usually to get the
documentation all to do is an apt-get install package-doc. That

I can confirm this bug with feisty final and openoffice 2.2.0 (up to
date).
I could reproduce this bug with the following steps:
- start openoffice impress
- open help
- klick search tab
- enter some search-text
- klick search button
=> all openoffice windows disappear
- recovery will start on nex
The following may sound like a very naive suggestion, but I will make it
anyway. Usually fsck is run routinely every 30 (or so) times a file
system is mounted. Is there any reason why fsck can not instead be run
in the background in read-only mode every so often while the system is
running? This
Or as an alternative form of my last comment, do a live scan on every
boot (or every second, third or whatever) and set a maximum number of
times a given error can appear before a full scan is forced on the next
boot.

This definitely seems to be KNetworkManager-related. I have just
switched to Ubuntu without the K (i.e. installed ubuntu-desktop and
removed the kubuntu bits) and it works fine now.
Since there is apparantly now no one who can reproduce this bug, you
might as well close it until someone else sees
By the way, I just noticed the the bug description has a typo - it
should be (K?)NetworkManager of course. Actually the ? can be removed
too now.
