I have this problem on an install of lucid from the original alternate
ISO and upgraded from there, i386 on a P4 with ATI (Mobility). Compiz is
working nicely but gnome-settings-daemon usually doesn't start. No
problems on my natty desktop.

For my part this turned out to be a die bonding error that HP knew was a
problem with my laptop, but it took me literally over a day on the phone to
get someone to admit it and send me another machine... after two
"technician" visits that left my laptop unbootable and not just glitching.

with Maverick and Ubuntu on fresh install with nVidia drivers via repo.
Am not running unclutter (seeing some related bugs?) and more
interestingly was not having this problem on migrated install upgraded
through each step appro

repeated entries)

It is stupid to have the apps set opacity, that is Compiz' job. If you
put the settings in the apps the user has to control them per-app. If
you let the compositing manager handle opacity then all the settings are
in one place.
It's not a feature, it's an intentional bug, and it's done the WRONG

if you run yiff manually you get an error about not being able to open
/dev/dsp
probably it needs wrapping with padsp, if that even works.
Still broken in Lucid! Fail, fail.

On lucid I used the wallpaper plugin and I had per-desktop wallpaper.
Now if I turn it on I just lose window transparency (I use emerald) and
the desktop is never redrawn.

Just before you close this bug when the USB / SATA race condition is
fixed, remember that our computers should be using ICH9, not ATA_PIIX.
That's our real problem...

@Konom: that recipe forces loading ata_piix before USB. But the thing
is that inspirons 530 (at least mine) comes with ICH9 chipset, so the
right driver should be the more advanced AHCI, which will use all the
advanced capabilities in the ICH9...
