You are correct.. I am running /usr/bin/metacity --replace
and getting splendid response on my machine (with Visual
Effects = None.
To get the bad performance experienced, gconf-editor-
apps-metacity select
I have t41 too. But it's working fine with compositing. It has radeon 7100
mobile graphics card.
I don't like compiz, so I disable it not from command line doing hard thing,
but from menu system - display and so on.

There are many different T41 configurations and some have old Intel
onboard chipsets.
