Hard hang on ThinkPad T41 on Karmic Koala. Probably other "older"
systems.
The current default "Change Desktop Background"->"Visual Effects"
in Karmic is "Normal".

I will file a bug report... Thanks for the pointer.
You are correct.. I am running "/usr/bin/metacity --replace"
and getting splendid response on my machine (with "Visual
Effects" = "None".
To get the bad performance experienced, gconf-editor->
apps->metacity select compos
I have t41 too. But it's working fine with compositing. It has radeon 7100
mobile graphics card.
I don't like compiz, so I disable it not from command line doing hard thing,
but from menu system -> display and so on.

There are many different T41 configurations and some have old Intel
onboard chipsets.
