I just came home to discover an error as described above- My puter was
shutdown when I returned home. On reboot, Kubuntu gets as far as the

It is not an nvidia problem after. Something changed my xorg.conf from nvidia
to nv and I started to feel the effects only after the next reboot, which as I
said before, I try to delay as much as possible.

Reverting to the previous version (x-x-i-s_0.15.0+git20080820-1ubuntu1)
cures the problem - behavior back to normal.
I booted in Recovery mode, selected root terminal, did apt-get remove
x-x-i-s and then dpkg -i with the previous version, which was in the
apt/archives.

I was about to add a comment saying that I had DRI back in the latest
Intrepid update (as of Sat 30th about 11pm - kernel 2.6.27-2) - but then
I noticed it had switched me to AIGLX and even though glxinfo showed
direct rendering it was in fact using the 'DRISWRAST GL' module in the X

Testing mythtv-backend on intrepid I noticed mythtv wasn't starting at
boot. Turns out the init script has a bogus default start runlevel,
which means update-rc.d doesn't add any start symlinks:

I've also submitted a bug report to kernel.org. Allegedly this bug is
solved in 2.6.27 rc5
Will there be an Ubuntu package for that kernel version or should I
compile it myself?

I can report that, unfortunately, this bug still exists on 177.70 and
2.6.27-2 (x86_64).
I also did some more testing, in an attempt to find out where in the
initialization process the hang is occurring. I ran the command

I can say for certain that as of 7.10, the bug still applied. I
vaguely remember trying this with 8.04 and the same issue occurring,
but it's been a long time. Eventually, I just I threw Gentoo on the
box and that fixed the problem.
Note that the issue wasn't just limited to a single
