Same happened here. I noticed that the issue appears with all QT3
applications actually. GNOME and QT4 apps are not impacted at all.
This problem is related to the NVidia proprietary driver. When using the

Last time I tried this with Hardy, the disks would turn off, but if I tried
to use the computer after not having done so in awhile, such as after being
on overnight, any activity would cause the disk I/O to thrash seemingly
indefinitely and the machine was unusable until a hard restart.

I should add it is impossible to switch on / switch off the front headset
output. Skype does play sound with some settings, but never records from mic
(however there is a setting in alsamixer that makes it possible to use the
headset microphone as pa in conjunction with speakers.

I installed ubuntu-desktop to perform the test you asked and the icons
do not appear garbled in Gnome. I even ran some of the same programs
that appear garbled in KDE, e.g. liferea and kopete. Their icons appear
normally.

Eventually got it working. Due to trial and (lots of) error mostly.
Attached is my working xorg.conf. The screen resolution is now at
1680x1050 at 60hz (according to System - Preferances - Screen
Resolution).

I installed the nvidia 180.06 driver which solves this issue on my notebook
(quadro 140)
It was installed via the *.run file. Therefore I dont know how to remove it

Same problem for me, after changing the language of the computer from
English to French.
I fixed by moving all contents of my old ~/Desktop folder to the new
~/Bureau, including the hidden file '.directory'. After that I logged
out and logged back in and all was well.

I have now installed the 27.8 kernel with the pci=nomsi boot option. The
standard kernel goes through the motions and then shuts the monitor down
in Kubuntu. It works in Ubuntu and with the recovery option.
The system is using the nvidia 177.80 driver and the standard kernel in
Kubuntu does not
It is not possible to select 2ch/6ch and the headphone frontoutput does
not work.
Anything helpful to read out?

The latest Nimbus upstream update changed the icons a little bit, so
that especially the start menu icon now does not need to be changed for
upper screen taskbar. IMHO, no further customization required.
