After two weeks of struggling, yesterday, while driving back home, I suddenly

I try different options, and found the proper one, at least for Xming X
server on WinXP: You have to enable 16001 port on Windows firewall. I
enabled both UDP and TCP 16001 and after few seconds orange background
disappears and desktop appears. I also remove sound modules from memory
on Linux

Peter, did you do all updates on your Intrepid system? The mentioned
problem is caused by a bug in Poppler which produced invalid PDF. Please
check which Poppler version you have installed via
dpkg -l | grep poppler
The version must be 0.8.7-1ubuntu0.1 (or newer).

confirmed that downgrading to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
0.15.2-0ubuntu8 fixes the problem, so looks like it's a driver bug.

Yes, confirmed. I just tried to print this page using Firefox 3.0.5
under Ubuntu 8.10. No matter what I specify as “page scaling” (I tried
50% and 33%), the output is always printed at 100% size.

i know it's not the best way, especially as i don't know what
/usr/lib/kde4/kabc_akonadi.so is for but, here it worked to rename it (i
just said foo.so) and tried to start kopete again, i did not restart kde
but as a workaround it's okay for me
