It had been installed before, and I went back to the Synaptic package
manager to do a reinstall - which was successful. Again I was prompted to
configure the connection to mysql server from Python Poker 2.5, and had the
same problems.
The command string you sent resulted in successful connection.

Joshua,
I did as you asked and it made no difference.
On Friday 27 Nov, I proceeded with an automatic system update.
Unfortunately it killed my installation and I had to reinstall Ubuntu
from scratch.
While things are still not 100%, Ubuntu One seems to be working - at
least it is uploading
I tried the same methods Zach mentioned and it seems that they are still
only temporary solutions.

Kannan,
I would ask you to generate a new bug, including fresh logs, Dpkg,
kernel installed and so, since this bug is now related to other problem,
not clearly related (perhaps) to yours.
Please feel free to attach a relation between this and the new one you
start.
Thanks.
