Problem solved.
Hardware issue. The mainboard was shorted against the casing which
disabled some of the onboard functions. Eventually discovered the
problem when the onboard LAN and USB stopped working causing me to
investigate.
Thanks for your help.

Gave up in the end. I have installed a fresh copy of 11.04.
Lost my settings etc of course, not ideal.

Yes problem solved.
Computer now boots as it should (i.e. 1minute and not 5-6 minutes!) and doesn't
hammer the slow hard drive (which resulted in slowing the entire computer down)
It was definitely something to do with window managers/some sort of
caching/compiz/etc

Hi Seth,
Just upgraded to the very buggy alpha of Oneiric however, the RAM issue
is still there..
My main problem with this is, it makes the computer near unusable as it
runs on so much swap, opening a new webpage could take a minute! So
obviously not useable and I need to use this for work -
Thanks Seth for your effort. Do you suggest I wait for someone else or
just try the upgrade to the new Beta?

Thanks Seth.
Did logout but instead of taking me back to the login screen, the
computer just turned the monitor off! It was still on as the hard drive
was responding to my keyboard input. Couldn't get anywhere so the magic
ctrl+alt+del worked successfully in doing a shutdown.
Rebooted, went

Ok no one replied to this so I tried the upgrade to full 11.04, it half worked
apart from most hardware drivers were not working at all..
* graphics went into some kind of basic backup default setting
* no sound
several other things I cant remember right now
So i ended up doing a full fresh

11.04 Beta has crashed out and will not load GUI at all. it flicks on
and off for a few seconds and then drops to a blank black screen. I can
then Alt+F5 etc into console.
I have gone to recovery console and tried the repair broken packages
option, it upgrades several
Right then, spent an hour and updated to the latest beta from the PPA source
you gave and this copy works fine, I can now import mp4, edit and export to
mp3..
The standard repo version wouldn't even let me work on mp3's after opening
and would not let me open 'any' mp4 files that I have.
Thanks
