I have recently bought an Asus K43U with AMD processor. I found the same problem. However while trying other distros (in a Unity avoidance strategy) I noticed the the version 3.x.x linux kernel that ships with Ubunto 11.10 does not have this problem but Mint 11 based on an earlier kernel does.
