After having installed from the herd-3 and herd-4 LiveCDs, the CD

Yes, it's the same problem from the desktop. However, I noticed that it
also happens on first suspend/hibernate; There's a really long pause,
the computer doesn't seem to do anything, then the suspend/hibernate
starts.
I'll test if this is related to networkmanager (which I suspect).

Neither a gdm bug nor a a real suspend/hibernate bug, but a bug with
network startup time: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source
/gnome-power-manager/+bug/9138
Seems that network startup is now in the critical boot path and stalls
suspend/hibernate this way.
** Changed in: gdm (Ubuntu)
I did some more debugging and found out that if I remove all lines from
/etc/network/interfaces, the boot is *much* faster. The dhclient.conf
timeout doesn't improve the situation at all, but the boot is stalled
because Ubuntu puts a couple of interfaces in the network config. I'm
using
This bug not only stalls boot, but also adds delays to
suspend/hibernate. I added gnome-power-manager to the list of affected
packages.
** Summary changed:
- Default dhcp timeout should be shorter
+ Network startup stalls boot
** Also affects: gnome-network (Ubuntu)
