I investigated this issue on my machine and somehow it seems that it can
be worked around (at least it worked for me the workaround suppressed
the error so far) using a hidden BIOS setting by changing the SATA mode
from Compatible to Enhanced. I posted some details on how to

The BIOS does have some hidden settings, one of which enables setting
the SATA mode. The problem is that the default (at least in BIOS version
04CA) already is Compatible. To show the undocumented settings, enter
the CMOS setup (by hitting F2 during boot). Then, press Fn+F11 followed
by Fn+F12.
I am also sporadically getting this crash with the most recent Jaunty
beta packages...

Update: Had a look at /var/crash and there are no OO.org related crash
reports in there - even when launching scalc with the -norestore
switch. So, apparently, no crash reports are generated...

The crash happened on first use of PenguinTV in Kubuntu 7.10 Beta.
Starting PenguinTV was sufficient to trigger it - the UI did not even
come up.

When starting PenguinTV on the command line, I get:
