strange, did you try the .deb? during the install of virtualbox you have to
agree with license. this appears in the terminal. when you dont agree the
install fails and often breaks apt and the synaptic.
synaptic and -apt is still working?
please try: sudo dpkg --remove --force-remove-reinstreq

remove virtualbox from your homemap: virtualbox.

this is not a bug. but a envy configuration problem in my opinion.
installing drivers with the restricted drivers manager don't cause X problems
with every (kernel)-upgrade/update.

thx for the additional info. i really dont know why this occurs in OO and not
in inkscape

-It's the configuration made by the installer ok, but i suggest to install the
closed source drivers
